So I just watched “Supersize Me” for the first time and man all I can say is I won’t be eating at McDonalds for a long time. I’ve been eating at Panera bread a lot lately, I figured it was a classier version of subway, I was so dead wrong. After watching the movie I did some research on my favorite foods I like to eat while going out and discovered the one sandwich I eat at Panera covers over half my fat requirements for the day. Now you all may be thinking, “But Halfpenny you are a skinny bastard with only bone and muscle”, and to this I thankfully agree, but I am also a firm believer in healthy eating in your youth will lead to healthy eating as you get older. Also my job from here on out will entails 8-10 hours of sitting a day not the most active life style, so I also force myself to go out and run around.
What disturbed me most about the video is watching the little kids at highschool (ick I just said little kids in highschool) pick from their daily assortment of options from the cafeteria. There was jack shit on the healthy side but oh so much fried and sweet goodness everywhere else. If kids are expected to be health conscience at an early age, the schools need to educate the children about these issues and provide the options for the lifestyle. This would pretty much entail eliminating soda for that quick fix, ending the mass distribution of chocolate and chips. Give the students more options and teach them why it’s important to make the right decisions.
The movie also made an interesting point about smoking. There was an incident that was discussed involving a group of people sitting for dinner. One of the guys lit a cigarette and began smoking, another obnoxious gentleman began berating the man for smoking. There was also an extremely overweight person sitting at the table yet no one made an comment about that because it’s very taboo to make fun of someone’s weight. Its ok to say “Stop it you dirty filthy smoker are you trying to kill yourself?” but not ok “Hey you fat behemoth stop eating so much all of our health insurance is higher because of you”. It seems extremely hypocritical and I honestly can’t wait till I am in a situation where a really fat guy makes fun of a skinny guy smoking, I’m pretty sure I’d have a field day with that one. I want to make it clear I support neither obesity nor smoking, I find both vile lifestyles and hope to avoid them at all costs
