Work has been weird for the last week. It started with an Incident that impacted a few hundred thousand people, then a discussion, then a last-minute request to join a late night meeting with a VP. Then a frantic write up on different solutions and impacts. Then a discussion with leadership to come up with the right approach. Then I proposed a possible solution to one of our more challenging teams to work with and they exploded that our ask was way too much of a rush. (Even though we just wanted to know if it would work) don’t worry I solved it on my own after they proved difficult. This was a stressful weekend.
This when things got even weirder. I gave up leading the problem and relied on a higher up to drive the solution. Since this involved a ton of VPs and a huge deliverable it made sense LT would drive it and I would support, but then the lead started drifting from my understanding of the problem and what I thought would be a good solution. Then other LT start chiming in and our internal side started heavily contradicting with our outside forces. So now there’s this weird ping pong effect, where the very high LTs are making proclamations, that are causing us lower devs to be like wtf. That’s not how this works. That’s not how any of this works. So somehow my week has just been hey Person A, oh talk to Person B ok… Hey person B? Person B why are you not responding? Hey person A, I can’t get Person B to respond, oh but Person C just made a big statement, oh crap we need to talk to Person D. My brain hurts and I’m tired lol. Welcome to corporate bureaucracy.
