A couple weekends ago we had a blizzard in pretty much all of the Midwest. Being the brilliant guy I am, I decided what the hell lets go to Madison to visit Greg. So I leave work that afternoon and I am pelted by little flying daggers from the sky, otherwise known as hail. Fucking hail. So I run to my car, making periodic yelps of profanity, cuz man did those lil ice pellets hurt.
After taking forever and a day to gather my shit I headed out. The drive started ok, a few light flurries, but as the night fell, so did the snow. It got thicker and thicker on the ground. Soon I couldn’t see the road, but was instead forced to rely on the person driving in front of me. Eventually I couldn’t see to my sides or more than 20 ft ahead. Two glowing break lights lead my way. Soon I couldn’t see past the front of my car and I began to get scared. My wipers had frozen and had accumulated about 2 inches of ice. I wanted to pull over, but I couldn’t tell where over was. I slowed to a crawl and all the cars behind me passed me. I got out banged all the ice of my wipers, the snow was coming down in droves. I got in my car and started following someone again. Soon they pulled off to the side of the road too, I wanted to turn back but since I was at the half way point, either way I went I was screwed.
So the car pulled over I was now in the lead, and they began to follow me. I couldn’t see the road anymore, all of Wisconsin was a plane of white. Shortly after I was in the lead, the road turned, and I didn’t. Well let me put it this way it turned; I realized much too late and lost control. In about 5 seconds I went from 151 northbound to 151 southbound. To everyone else it looked like a U-Turn, to me it looked like a near death experience. So I just pulled over to the side of the road and sat there, trying to regain my cool and get my bearings. A giant line of cars, lead by a truck, passed me and I began to follow them. The rest of the drive was without incident. It took about 4.5 hours to drive a two hour trip.
The rest of the weekend was a blast. Notable events were: seeing Greg and Kellie, going to a beer festival and not being able to shake my buzz for eight hours, seeing “Pan’s Labyrinth”, eating Vietnamese and Taco bell, experiencing a beer that tasted like fruity pebbles, and finally shoveling about 2 tons of snow from a driveway.
