So I’m reading “Dreams from my Father” by Barack Obama. I must say I have a great admiration for him. First off he’s the first rock start status politician I’ve ever heard of. People like him because he’s the kind of person everyone likes. He’s honest, well spoken, kind; he has that sort of mass appeal that I guess Kennedy had back in the day. His book is also excellent; it is well written, it has depth, and even causes me to reflect. Which is somewhat impressive since it’s a book that has a lot to do with race, yet I am the whitest white guy ever.
So here’s where I’m torn… Barack is running for president. I am a total libertarian. Many of his beliefs and political views smack mine in the face. Yet when the time comes would it be ok to vote for someone on pure feeling. I may not 100% agree with his politics, but I believe in the man. Barack doesn’t strike me as someone who would lie or cheat. Someone who would pass legislation that is corrupt. He wouldn’t attempt to systematically take away our rites as citizen, unlike our current president. In fact just listening to Obama speak inspires me to do greater things. Maybe it is his rock star status, maybe he’s a breath of fresh air. I don’t know. I do know even though my mind may take me one way, I may try to look past what’s on paper and vote for who I think is the highest quality. Besides not like he can implement his political agenda without congressional support…
PS I think I am going to his kickoff meeting March 6th down in Coralville let me know if you wanna come with.
