Yesterday on the way back from a pie/beer run, Schroeder and I were talking about ethics, and after a lot of discussion he said that it seems like I only have a couple that are few and far between. So this got me thinking what do I feel is right versus wrong?
I know for all certainty that hurting someone who isn’t trying to hurt you is wrong, but on what level can I claim this. Physically obviously, but mentally and psychologically is a whole new realm. Should I lie in order to prevent someone harm? Thus causing two conflicting morals. At which point I decided you should only lie to someone in order to prevent them from being hurt if there’s nothing they can do about the situation that would help them.
I was also thinking about sex before marriage, and wondered if this was wrong, and thus I came to my second big ethic. You shouldn’t do something if you can’t take responsibility for the result. I feel this is something everyone should live by. I don’t care if people have sex, as long as they are capable of dealing with the results, like a child. This is also the reason I believe drug use should be legal. As long as people are responsible then they shouldn’t be arrested for smoking marijuana, drinking, ect.
I have one last ethic that I feel everyone should uphold and that is, don’t aggressively try to change someone to who you want them to be. It’s alright to have an argument and try to persuade someone to your view, or as a parent trying to eliminate bad habits such as laziness or being a slob. What I am referring to is don’t try to change a persons core. If a person wants to fly don’t stand in there way. Don’t belittle someone’s ideas or views. The best part of having an opinion is that you can never be wrong.
So that’s the three tenants I try to live by.
1. Don’t hurt some one unless they are endangering you.
2. Always be able to take responsibility for your actions.
3. Finally, Don’t aggressively try to change someone to fit your needs
They may be few, and I’m sure I’m leaving out something, but I feel if you live these three rules you will always be successful in life.
If you have an opinion feel free to leave it in my new handy dandy comment feature, and please use your real name I do enjoy hearing what my friends think.
